Excursion to the VIP Grand Canyons of Montenegro

The tour will begin quite early, since you will have to travel around almost the entire country - around 06:0 in the morning. The minibus starts its route from Tivat and Kotor to Budvy. Then, literally in half an hour, it will gather tourists from almost all the resorts on the coast: Becici, Rafailovici, Przno, Sveti Stefana, Petrovac, Buljarica and Sutomore. If you haven’t seen the resorts and the coast, this is a great opportunity to see how it works. Don't forget to take warm clothes with you: temperatures in the north and coast may be different. Comfortable shoes and scarves to cover your shoulders and legs, since our program includes a visit to a monastery. 

Excursion program Grand Canyons

The route passes through mountain passes, Skadar Lake or Cetina (passing through) and the capital Burntsa. If you want to go on several excursionsand - after looking at the lake, decide for yourself whether you want to go on the excursion to Lake Skadar to see it closer or the excursion to the Ostrog Monastery and Podgorica is similar.

Then we will pass the capital of Montenegro - Podgorica and other cities such as Niksic and Shavnik. You will see almost the whole of Montenegro from the coast to the north of the country.

In the north of Montenegro we are waiting for The Tara River Canyon and its grandeur.

Its depth is more than 1300 meters, and its length is 78 km. The river also hosts Rafting - the most exciting extreme adventure in Montenegro!

We get to the deepest place of the gorge at Djurdjevic Bridge - this is a great structure of the mid-20th century. The length of one of the spans is 108 meters above the abyss, and the height is more than 150 m.

Although the bridge is a car bridge, all tourists are still allowed to cross on foot from one bank to the other and even take photographs, since this is one of the main attractions and tourist routes for all tourists.

If you wish, you can go down on a rope through the canyon - Zip-Line. When booking an excursion, you have the option to book a flight.We advise you to first go to the zipline, then to take photos on the bridge, and then to buy souvenirs. Near the bridge or at technical stops, Montenegrins sell various home specialties (honey, wine, rakia...) - our advice: buy what you tried and liked, as it happens that they sell the wrong honey that you liked during tasting.

Here in the Tara Canyon, in front of the Djurdzhevich Bridge, we will stop for lunch at a national restaurant with its delicacies. Set lunch is available for an additional fee of 15e per person upon request (can be selected when booking an excursion). The set lunch consists ofand a choice of grilled trout with a side dish or meat, salad (cabbage, tomatoes, cucumbers - seasonal vegetables), bread. Drinks for extra fee to be paid on the spot. Lunch is paid in cash to the guide on the bus.Lunch is approximately expected at 12.00, since, firstly, the excursion is early, many tourists had breakfast at 5:30-06:00 in the morning, and secondly, unfortunately further along the route in the north of Montenegro in the canyons there are practically no more restaurants that can accommodate a group or do not offer set lunches.

Having eaten deliciously, we will move towards the cityZabljak.

This area is one of the five national parks of Montenegro, calledDurmitor, is listed under the protection of UNESCO as a world natural-geographical object. This place contains the highest peaks of the country - Mount Bobotov Kuk (2522 meters above sea level). And at the foot is the famousBlack Lakewith its purest clear water.It takes about 10 minutes to get there one way, so don’t waste time. About 1 hour of free time is allocated to Black Lake. This is such a beautiful place that you want to admire it for hours, but unfortunately we cannot spend more than 1 hour of our time on it, since the excursion is long, lasts about 12 hours, and it is necessary to have time to pass all the sights along the route.

You are allowed to swim if you wish. Don't forget to bring your swimwear. And those who don’t want to can go boating for an additional fee. There will be enough time to walk, take photos and enjoy the colorful landscapes.

Very often people come here to walk with their children, do yoga and just breathe fresh air - this is one of the “places of power” where you gain earthly energy for life!

Then a fascinating road to the mountains awaits. We will climb the Durmitor mountain range to a height of 2000 meters above sea level.

Alpine meadows and a stone sea, as we call this area, will surround us around every turn.

The terrain is so varied that the views will change from all directions.

Many even compare this territory to the surface of the Moon.

Let's visitCanyon of the Piva River(flooded) andPiva Lake. Amazingly emerald colored water, which reflects the majestic mountains and blue sky. Its length is 48 km between the mountains in a flooded gorge. The view is magnificent, isn't it? This place is also called a place of power and inspiration. The depth reaches 200 m and is the largest source and reservoir of drinking water in Europe. There are 2 types of fish: lake trout - up to 25 kg and chub - up to 3 kg.

We will visit a very interesting monastery. From the outside it looks like an ordinary big house, but inside it is a fascinating storehouse of spirituality and treasures. The ancient frescoes from floor to ceiling will make you look at them with great curiosity. And it is called Piva Monastery, dedicated to the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Yes yes, that's right! It was named after the river that flows nearby, which means "drinking". 

This Orthodox monastery is unique. Previously, it stood in the gorge of the Piva Canyon in the city of Pluzine, but after the construction of the dam in 1976, local residents left their homeland, but could not leave the monastery - their spiritual source. Therefore, they dismantled it, first numbering each pebble, and moved it higher into the mountains, and then built it in exactly the same way as it was in its original form. Crowds of tourists do not come to this monastery. It will amaze you with its pure magical aura.

We will return through Lake Slanskoe and Boka Kotor Bay.

And cross the bay by ferry and enjoy the scenery.

Photo stops and a lunch break are planned along the entire route, which is provided at a national restaurant with famous local food.

Excursions in Montenegro start from the bus stops indicated when booking. Due to the dense, chaotic development on the coast and mountainous terrain, buses cannot travel to every hotel or villa, so tourists go to certain places. When booking, choose the closest stop from your place of residence.

We advise tourists to refrain from excursions with small children, as the excursion is quite tiring and lengthy, with pressure changes, 3 climate zones and temperature conditions.

Arrival time at the attraction, duration of stops and return are approximate. This may be earlier than indicated on the website, or 3-4 hours late. Be sure to read the “Tourist Memo”, which will be sent to you by e-mail along with the voucher.

Attention:Due to recent circumstances - a rock collapse on the road at the beginning of the Tara River Canyon, road construction work and road closures until the end of 2025, the excursion route will be as follows: Coast of Montenegro - Podgorica - Niksic - Shavnik - River Canyon Tara - Djurdjevic Bridge - Zabljak - Black Lake - Durmitor - Piva Lake with a canyon - Piva Monastery - Niksic - Slansko Lake - Boka Which Bay - Coast of Montenegro. Tourists who booked a Grand Canyon excursion before 06/01/2025 according to the old program (which included Moraca Canyon and Moraca Monastery) whose excursion has not yet taken place will be notified by email until June 7, 2025 about changing the program, route and their further consent. The cost of the excursion remains the same. The last update of the program and page on the website occurred on 06/02/2025.
